Expanded BiographyFrom a very early age, as early as kindergarten and first grade at The Heritage School in Miami Shores, my parents - especially my mother - always urged me to pursue a career in medicine. However, I consistently rejected the notion, opting for a career in dentistry or engineering. Frankly, I wanted to choose anything but what my mom wanted me to. It wasn't until I had reached college and met other like-minded students who were not only planning to go into the medical field but who became lifelong friends of mine that I changed my mind. So during my sophomore year I shifted my major from biomedical engineering to pre-med. That decision was only the beginning of a journey that would open a world of education and science that I could not have dreamed of. Through medical school, residency and fellowship it was not always an easy haul, but as my parents - both of them school teachers - always reminded me, Rome was not built in a day.

My mother used to tell me it was "never a dull moment" for things to happen, whether good or bad. But one should always he hopeful and expectant. In early 2007 circumstances occurred in my employment that one would consider unfortunate - even ill-fated - but one thing I've learned is to turn misfortune and adversity into opportunity. So at that time I decided to open my own wound care company, Marcus Mason MD, PA, after having practiced in that sub-specialty for four years and becoming published and certified in it. Now I feel happier and more satisfied with my career than I ever have, and I realize that this is a point in my life where my mother had always hoped I would be.
